The Edmonton Oilers have another top-10 draft pick and with that comes another chance to build around its young core. The Oilers have the third selection in Friday nights first round, a year after taking Darnell Nurse seventh and two years removed from a streak of three consecutive No. 1 picks. But even with forwards Nail Yakupov (2012), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2011), Taylor Hall (2010) and Jordan Eberle (23rd in 2008) in the fold, Edmonton isnt in a position to be position specific. "Youre just trying to get the best available player you can," head amateur scout Stu MacGregor said in a phone interview. "And if you end up with too many of one kind of player, it would then be up to management to trade whichever asset you have to attain something else at a different position." General manager Craig MacTavish has made no secret of his desire to acquire a puck-moving defenceman this off-season, which isnt exactly a unique need in todays NHL. The No. 3 pick isnt likely the place do that, unless it becomes a trade chip. The Oilers hosted defenceman Aaron Ekblad, centres Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart and multi-purpose forward Leon Draisaitl recently, MacTavish said in a radio appearance on AM-630 in Edmonton. Two of those players are sure to be available third overall, though Ekblad — a pro-ready two-way defenceman — is considered the likely No. 1 pick to Florida or whichever team trades for it. With Hall and Eberle taking up top-six wing spots, there could be room for Bennett or Reinhart, perhaps even right away, behind Nugent-Hopkins. MacTavish wants to fill in his top three lines so that grinders like Matt Hendricks and Boyd Gordon can slide down the lineup. NHL Central Scouting director Dan Marr said during the scouting combine that he sees this draft as being full of players to stock the bottom half of teams rosters. The top-end talent is limited, but Marr thinks there are plenty of prospects with long-term staying power as role players. At No. 3, or if they move down slightly, the Oilers should be able to get a difference-maker. While not as good as the "incredible" 2013 crop, MacGregor thinks the top 10 players available are strong. After the first round, things get murky for the Oilers. They dont have a second-round pick — sent to the St. Louis Blues last year for winger David Perron — or a third-round pick — sent to the Los Angeles Kings in January for goaltender Ben Scrivens. MacTavish said on AM-630 that hes not in a position to trade assets to get draft picks, certainly not after dealing some away for more immediate help. With two fourth- and two fifth-rounders, Edmonton can continue to stock the cupboard, although the team hasnt unearthed a full-time NHL player beyond the third round in a decade. Unrestricted free agency will likely go a longer way toward determining the Oilers 2014-15 roster than this draft, and the chances the team has of reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2006 when it went to the Stanley Cup final. MacTavish said the Oilers will chase some of the bigger names available but are more specifically looking for secondary help behind the primary pieces already in place. As trade talk heats up — MacTavish said hed had "some fairly intriguing conversations" about moving up and down from the third pick — the Oilers are in position to add salary. MacTavish hopes they can give up less by doing that and improve in the immediate future. --- Follow @SWhyno on Twitter Cheap Manny Ramirez Jersey . - Joao Plata scored twice in the final 24 minutes, including the winner in stoppage time, to help Real Salt Lake remain unbeaten with a 3-2 victory over the winless Chicago Fire on Saturday night. The Czechs will be without their top two players, as world No. 4 Petra Kvitova and No. 16 Lucie Safarova are not on their team roster. It will be Canadas first appearance in the elite World Group I. Bouchard did much to get them there by going 4-0 in wins over Serbia and Slovakia in 2014.Its the first time were there and wed like to go to the next round and make it to the semifinals, said Lapierre. But Eugenie knows that, and shes demonstrated in the past that she likes playing in the Fed Cup. So Im sure her decision will be the good one.If Bouchard opts out, Canada will likely go with a young prospect as its fourth player.Bouchard reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this week before falling in straight sets to Maria Sharapova. After the defeat at the first Grand Slam of the season, Bouchard was asked if she was looking forward to Fed Cup. She replied that she didnt know if she would be playing or not, adding she planned to visit with family and take some time off to rest.A reporter followed up by asking why she wouldnt play.Thats something I was going to decide after the tournament, Bouchard said. You know, my tournament ended like half an hour ago, so Im still going to talk to my team and make the best decision for me if I can play or not.It is a busy time for Bouchard, who is entered in an indoor tournnament the week after the Fed Cup in Belgium.ddddddddddddLapierre said she may be able to do both because she is the top-ranked player in the Belgian event and may not have to play a match there until later in the week. Plus the Fed Cup is also indoors and would be good practice. He added that Canadian Fed Cup captain Sylvain Bruneau is confident Bouchard will play. The Canadian roster includes Torontos Sharon Fichman (No. 135), 17-year-old prospect Francoise Abanda of Montreal (No. 202) and doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa (ranked No. 60 in doubles). The top-ranked Czechs will be represented by Karolina Pliskova (No. 20), Tereza Smitkova (No. 68), Denisa Allertova (No. 107), and Lucie Hradecka (No. 142).The Czechs have been crowned Fed Cup champions three of the last four years.Even without Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova, the Czech team is still very dangerous, Bruneau said in a statement. They chose to go with youth. Karolina Pliskova and Tereza Smitkova are two rising stars in womens tennis and they deserve all of our respect.Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., was on the Canadian team last year but shes still recovering from shoulder surgery.Lapierre said that even without Bouchard, Canada has a chance against a Czech side lacking Fed Cup experience. Its always better to have your number one player, but that said, of the three named, two have played numerous Fed Cups, he said. For Francoise Abanda, it would be her first Fed Cup and its a tremendous opportunity for her to shine. She hasnt blossomed completely yet, but she has the talent, and playing in front of her crowd in Quebec City would be fantastic. The Czechs have a perfect 5-0 record against Canada in Fed Cup play. Their last meeting came in 2002.The winner will advance to the Fed Cup semifinals and keep a place in World Group I for 2016. The loser will play a World Group I playoff to remain among the top eight countries in the world.
