Ethier was out with lingering soreness after playing 13 innings in centre field the previous night. Ramirez was scratched about a half-hour before the first pitch with sore ribs. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning of the Game 1 loss. Earlier in the day, Mattingly described Ramirez as "iffy" and said there might be a change prior to game time. Ramirez also made a leaping catch on a soft liner by Matt Holliday in the bottom of the first, then was bent over in the dugout while being treated by a trainer.
