CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Brad Kaaya gets recognized almost everywhere he goes now. Fans asked him to pose for pictures with them at a recent Justin Bieber concert. Hes gotten used to shooing away people who see him in restaurants and try to pick up his check. He even got noticed at a baseball game earlier this year.A game in Toronto, that is.Even when hes far from home, all eyes seem to be on Miamis quarterback. The Hurricanes have new coach in Mark Richt and are a decade removed from their last bowl win, but possess a bona fide star in Kaaya -- a junior widely expected to turn pro after this season and who has Miamis now-annual hopes for a resurgence resting squarely on his shoulders.Weve gone through some things and weve been in big games, Kaaya said. Weve had all kinds of ups and downs. Weve got guys who have played in Blacksburg, played at Tallahassee, played at Nebraska, guys whove seen a lot. And from practice one this spring, even with a new offense, we clicked right away. I dont want to get too ahead of myself, but that right there has me pretty excited. If Kaayas excited, thats a good thing for the starving Hurricane fan base.Hes had a California coolness to him -- makes sense, since hes from the Los Angeles area -- from basically the moment he arrived on campus two years ago and was quickly installed as the starting quarterback as a true freshman. Hes seen the program deal with NCAA sanctions, the firing of coach Al Golden last fall after a 58-0 loss to Clemson and plenty of other disappointments. But hes rarely rattled, and already has won Richts confidence -- even before Miami starts training camp in early August.Hes human. Not perfect, Richt said. But weve got a lot to work with. Hes very smart, very accurate, hes got good size, got great field vision and awareness. I havent coached him in the middle of a ballgame, dont know how he reacts to adversity. But I think theres a mental and physical toughness that he has thats crucial to have if youre going to have success at that position. The Hurricanes havent had as much success as they want, but thats hardly Kaayas fault.Miami is scheduled to open this season against Florida A&M on Sept. 3 -- Kaayas 21st birthday -- and at his current pace he could eclipse the schools all-time passing yardage record by seasons end. Kaaya has averaged 3,218 yards in each of his first two years with the Hurricanes; hes 3,130 yards away from breaking the record that Ken Dorsey set from 1999 through 2002.Hes eight touchdown throws away from being the third Hurricane to pass for 50 scores in a career as well. Its numbers like those -- and many others -- why hes mentioned among the elite players in the Atlantic Coast Conference by the coach of Miamis biggest rival, even while the Hurricanes have gone a mere 13-12 in Kaayas 25 career starts.Name me a league that has bigger stars than (Florida State running back) Dalvin Cook, (Clemson quarterback) Deshaun Watson and Brad Kaaya, said Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, who went on to rave about Kaayas throwing ability and in the past has even mentioned him as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate.Given all that, its easy to see why Kaaya could be a 2017 draft possibility. He knows very well that quarterbacks went No. 1 and No. 2 overall in this years draft, with Jared Goff and Carson Wentz in those spots. They signed deals that will be worth a combined $54.6 million over the next four years.Yet when the big question comes these days, Kaaya sidesteps it with ease. Its not really right to speculate, Kaaya said. Its not fair to me. Ive worked too hard to get ahead of myself. Dating back to when I was a freshman in high school and I had zero offers, thats what I think about. I think about the next day. Thats it. My biggest worry right now is getting through conditioning in the morning, the 6 a.m. workouts were doing.Just as he did in 2014 and 2015, he thinks Miami can turn this season into something special. And maybe more than ever, itll be on him to carry the Hurricanes to the heights theyre desperate to reach.Theres a lot of work to do, Kaaya said. But I think were on the right track. JACKSON, Miss. -- Patton Kizzire hopes to keep a promising start to the season going at a course where hes had recent success. The 30-year-old Kizzire is coming off a second-place finish at the Safeway Open in California two weeks ago and returns this week to the Sanderson Farms Championship, where he finished fourth a year ago.Kizzire -- who grew up in nearby Tuscaloosa, Alabama -- says one reason he feels so comfortable at the Country Club of Jackson is that it brings back some nostalgia.I grew up playing Bermuda greens and Bermuda rough in a country club-type setting like this, so it feels like it did when I was a kid, Kizzire said.He hopes the good feelings can help him break through and claim his first PGA Tour win. He finished 82nd in the FedExCup standings last season as a rookie and had five top-10 finishes. He followed that up with the second place finish in Napa, California, earlier this month. He had a one-shot lead going into the final round but shot a disappointing 70 on Sunday to finish second behind Brendan Steele.Kizzire believes hes close to ending one of these tournaments on top. He had multiple top-five finishes on the Web.com Tour in 2015 before persevering and finally getting his first victory.I imagine its kind of the same deal herre, Kizzire said.ddddddddddddizzire and the rest of the Sanderson Farms field will encounter a much different challenge in Jackson this week than it did a year ago, when the course was soaked from constant heavy rain. Its been very dry in central Mississippi over the past few months, and unseasonably warm and dry conditions are forecast throughout the tournament. Its ideal, Kizzire said. Its just the way we like it to play -- firm, fast and in great shape.David Toms -- a 13-time PGA Tour winner who is a fan favorite in Jackson because hes from nearby Louisiana -- said the dry conditions wont necessarily lead to lower scores. We played lift, clean and place last year, so now around the greens and on some of the fairways, youre not able to put the ball in hand, which can obviously be a big advantage sometimes, Toms said.Seven former Sanderson Farms winners are in the field, including Peter Malnati, Nick Taylor, Scott Stallings, Chris Kirk, Will MacKenzie, D.J. Trahan and Heath Slocum.Malnati won last years tournament on a Monday after constant rain forced the tournament to the extra day. He ended the season 57th in the FedExCup. ' ' '
