Nyquist is in the news again. Remember him? The Breeders Cup Juvenile winner, 2-year-old male champion, and undefeated hero of the Kentucky freakin Derby? All it took was two high-profile losses for him to be relegated to yesterdays fishwrap, a one-hit wonder. This years Super Saver. Orb in West Coast drag.Is this a tough room or what?In the most recent NTRA Top Thoroughbred poll -- comprised of 39 votes from an assortment of industry pundits -- Nyquist was still clinging to the No. 10 spot, compared to No. 6 for fellow 3-year-old Arrogate. His greatest sin, despite a record of 8 for 10, seems to be that he has not lived up to the standard set by American Pharoah. Good luck with that.Paul Reddams champ has been out of sight and nearly everyones mind since finishing fourth in the Haskell. He had been training at Del Mar, but Doug ONeill thought a change of scenery would help the cause -- there was something about a growth spurt -- so he dispatched Nyquist to San Luis Rey Downs, a Southern California training center so out of the way that GPS has yet to find it on the map.No kidding, said Kevin Havell, manager of San Luis Rey Downs. GPS takes you way over there to Lilac Road. We get delivery guys calling us all the time asking, Where are you? With such technological anonymity comes peace of mind. Horses loll around at San Luis Rey like box turtles. The only thing they look forward to more than feed time is a nap. Sure, they put in the hard work of racehorses in the morning -- Peter Miller wins training titles out of San Luis Rey -- but when the afternoon comes and the breeze from the Pacific crests the surrounding hills, it is easy to forget the hubbub of a racetrack backstretch full of 1,500 anxious animals and the attendant human traffic. The vacation is almost over, said Jonny Garcia on Monday morning, not long after giving Nyquist a solid jog around San Luis Reys dirt mile.Garcia has been riding Nyquist since the colt arrived at Santa Anita fresh from a 2-year-old sale. He has followed him to Keeneland, Gulfstream Park, Churchill Downs, Pimlico, and Monmouth Park, and now they are on the road again to Parx, near Philadelphia, for the $1.25 million Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday. At Parx, Nyquist will face his old pal Exaggerator, who beat him on sloppy tracks in both the Preakness and the Haskell Invitational. The forecast for Saturday calls for neither rain nor the presence of Arrogate, the runaway winner of the Travers, so the two classic winners should have the headlines to themselves.Exaggerator still needs to prove he can win a big one on a dry track, while Nyquist must quell any notions that the division has left him behind as the champion of the first five months of the year. This usually gets you nothing. In his favor, Nyquist has been working like he means it at San Luis Rey, with a progressively faster series of miles over the deepish, sandy loam. Nyquists most recent 1:38.20 under Garcia last weekend was as good as a horse should work.I know hes grown, and he feels stronger, Garcia said. His stride is bigger. I like to start him out relaxed in his work, then pick it up after about three-eighths and finish steady. When he is at his best, that is exactly how Nyquist runs his races. In his last two starts -- not coincidentally his only two losses -- he has been asked to press a fast pace. This is not his style, and at the same time, there is no reason to believe that a false pace would ever compromise his chances. He is the ultimate stalker.Garcia, 30, has been with the ONeill stable for nine years. Clearly, the trainer trusts him with the best. Garcias headline horses prior to Nyquist were Derby-Preakness winner Ill Have Another and two-time Breeders Cup Dirt Mile winner Goldencents. When Garcia says that Nyquist has never changed, he is talking about a relatively mellow equine personality that was transparent from the start. Even his quirks have persisted.Yes, look at the back wall, Garcia said, and sure enough, there were the telltale Nyquist teeth marks that have appeared in every stall hes ever occupied. But even the easygoing have their limits. ONeill thought a few sessions in the San Luis Rey equine swimming pool would do Nyquist a world of good, as it has for any number of horses who trend a little sour on the daily grind.First time in, he was great, said San Luis Reys Havell. Usually, when that happens, theyre golden. But when he went back in, he froze. It was clear he wanted out, so we certainly dont push them into having a bad experience. That was the end of the pool for him. What began as a two-week aqua-therapy break turned into six weeks of training-center bliss for Nyquist. And if hes not ready to pick up where he left off after winning the Kentucky Derby, hes been fooling a lot of people. Garcia doesnt think so.We leave here Wednesday, gallop there Thursday and Friday, win on Saturday, and come home to Santa Anita on Sunday, he said with a smile. Then back to work on Monday. There are some early surprises in the race for the Hart Trophy, but two of the contenders are the leagues biggest stars over the past decade. There are many more players in contention for the awards than just the three that Ive named, and a good or bad week can easily alter the landscape, but through the first 20 or so games of the NHL season, this is how the awards races look to me. http://www.airmax97outlet.it/scontate-air-max-97-neon.html . It was the kind of score that might make everyone else wonder which course he was playing. Except that Graeme McDowell saw the whole thing. Crouched behind the 10th green at Sheshan International, McDowell looked over at the powerful American and said, "Ive probably seen 18 of the best drives Ive seen all year in the last two days. CLEVELAND -- The prize theyve been chasing for months was right there in front of the Cleveland Indians.Carlos Rodon wouldnt let them touch it.Rodon struck out a career-high 11 over eight dominant innings and the Chicago White Sox denied Cleveland a chance to win the AL Central title with a 3-0 win Sunday.Blending a devastating fastball with a variety of off-speed pitches, Rodon (8-10) blanked the Indians on just two singles and easily handled the division leaders, who still havent wrapped up a playoff spot and have gone flat at the worst time possible.Thats the best Ive seen him, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. It seemed like he got better as the game went along. He seemed to turn it up in key situations. He had it all. Theres a lot on the line for these guys playing on the other side. Thats a lineup thats been able to rough us up and he responded.Rodon spoiled a big day for the Indians. Cleveland needed to win its regular-season finale at home and for Detroit to lose to Kansas City for the Indians to clinch their first division championship since 2007. The Royals took care of the Tigers 12-9, but the Indians fell flat and now must go to Detroit to try to wrap up the Central. The clubs open a four-game series Monday at Comerica Park. That hardly mattered to the White Sox, who enjoyed their weekend as spoilers.Theyre eventually going to win it, but we wont be around to see them celebrate, third baseman Todd Frazier said. Youve got to take pride in every game and every series so theyll have to do it on the road now.Chicagos Carlos Sanchez had two RBI off Josh Tomlin (12-9), who matched Rodon for 6 2/3 innings. But the left-hander turned in his best outing this season in Clevelands biggest game. He struck out the side in the eighth before David Robertson fanned three in the ninth for his 36th save.It was real fun, said Rodon, who has held the Indians to one run or fewer in five of his nine career starts against them. When Im going good, Im able to drive the ball through the zone and attack hitters.Maybe feeling some of the pressure to wrap up a division theyve led since June 4, the Indians didnt get their first hit until the fifth, when Cleveland threateened to get a run across.ddddddddddddrandon Guyer singled leading off and took second on a passed ball. Coco Crisp walked and Chris Gimenez sacrificed. But Michael Martinez popped to short right, not deep enough to score Guyer and Rodon struck out Rajai Davis. The Indians couldnt do much else against the 23-year-old.Hes a young pitcher and hes getting better with starts, Indians manager Terry Francona said. Weve seen a lot of them because hes in our division. His off-speed is better, even his delivery is smoothing out, and like a lot of young pitchers that have talent, youre starting to see him gain experience and hes pretty good.SURPRISE LEADERNot only has Frazier hit a team-high 39 home runs, his two steals Sunday gave him the club lead with 14. Not exactly known for his speed, Frazier passed Adam Eaton, who missed the last two games after crashing into the wall catching a fly ball Friday.I told Eaton I was going to get him, so he better get healthy quick, Frazier joked.Frazier swiped second in the fifth, when he scored on Sanchezs two-out single. He stole second again in the ninth. He looks like a fan ran on the field, Ventura cracked. I dont know how to explain it, but It works.STUNNED, SADDENEDBefore the game, players on both teams stood in front of clubhouse TVs and watched coverage of the death of Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez, killed in a boating accident.White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu, who like Fernandez defected from Cuba, sat quietly at his locker with his face turned from the room.TRAINERS ROOMWhite Sox: Eaton will be examined when the team returns to Chicago. Ventura said Eaton is still bothered by back soreness.UP NEXTWhite Sox: At a loss to explain his struggles since coming to Chicago in June, James Shields is 0-6 in his last 10 starts. The right-hander starts the series opener against Tampa Bay, the team he played for from 2006-12.Indians: Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber goes for his career-high 19th win as Cleveland begins its final road trip in Detroit.
